Last weekend elections to the Balearic Islands Parliament were held. Unsurprisingly the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) lost their majority to the People's Party (PP), which regains control after losing their majority back in 2007 to the PSOE, led by Francesc Antich. What was more surprising than the outcome was the fact that residents from certain European Union countries were only allowed to participate in the mayoral elections of the city/town where they are registered. As they have no right neither to vote for communal nor state elections on Balearic Islands nor in the corresponding elections in their homecountry, you could say that they have become second class European Citizens with less rights than immigrants to the E.U.. Well, if that is what we call European Unification and Democracy, then so be it.
Here the results in detail:
- People's Party (PP): 46,37%
- Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE): 21.39%
- Coalition of Nationalists, Green Party et.al: 8.61%
